My name is Nicola Joy, and I’ve been dabbling with music and words for years. I love the freedom these mediums give me to explore ideas, express emotions and connect with people.
Why Mad Solar Riot?
Mad Solar Riot is a shout-out to the madpunk (or Mad Pride) movement and the solarpunk movement.
Madpunk or Mad Pride is a movement for psychiatric survivors and people who manage ongoing mental health difficulties. It stands for Making a Difference or Movement Against Discrimination. It’s about resisting the stigma and label of being “disordered” while finding ways to support ourselves in the times our mental health or society’s reaction to our mental health causes us pain. The neurodivergent community (autistic community, ADHD, and other people with diagnoses) are included in the madpunk movement.
Solarpunk originated in science fiction as an optimistic genre, in contrast with cyberpunk grittiness, and heavily features technology and nature being in harmony with each other to stave off climate change and ensure humanity’s survival.
Both these movements resonate with me, and my personal motto of “good mental health and a liveable environment for all” are my guiding light for contributions to these movements. I am a proud madpunk, having experienced obsessions/compulsions, disordered eating, anxiety, post-natal depression, and possibly other neurodivergences yet to be formally diagnosed (although madpunk is not about formal diagnosis). My knowledge of solarpunk is less but I am so keen to do my part in creating a world our children can live to see.

This is a place for anyone who values mental health, the environment, and cares about resisting society’s greed and stigma to create a better world for us all, both inside and out. While I am a “bleeding heart leftie”, this space is not solely for lefties - it’s for everyone at the bottom who is coming for the top.
